U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun gave a closed briefing to Congress on Mar. 5, 2019 on the recent summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Biegun, who is in charge of day-to-day negotiations with the North, spoke before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for 1 1/2 hours to apparently detail what happened at last week's summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, and the next steps in the diplomatic effort.

The summit ended abruptly without an agreement after the sides sought a deal on dismantling the North's nuclear weapons program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Leaving the briefing room, Biegun was asked by a Yonhap reporter whether he plans to visit Pyongyang soon, but he declined to answer any questions.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said earlier that he is hopeful about sending a team to North Korea in the coming weeks. (Yonhap)
