SK Innovation has unveiled an ambitious plan to create a new lifeline along the coast of Tra Vinh Province in southern Vietnam. On July 7, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Tra Vinh provincial government and local social enterprise MangLub to restore 300 hectares of mangrove forest by 2030 — an area equivalent to about 420 soccer fields. This initiative represents a significant step forward in tackling climate change and preserving biodiversity.

The project goes beyond simple reforestation. SK Innovation is committed to working hand-in-hand with local communities, involving residents in planting and managing saplings. This approach not only fosters environmental sustainability but also creates jobs and stimulates the local economy. “Vietnam is a core business region for SK Innovation, and we are dedicated to building a sustainable model that integrates environmental and social values,” the company stated.

Since 2018, SK Innovation has engaged in mangrove restoration efforts. This latest agreement secures the necessary land and formalizes the long-term execution plan through 2030.

Mangrove forests are recognized as climate heroes, capable of storing up to five times more carbon than tropical rainforests. They also serve as vital habitats for diverse marine life and act as natural breakwaters that prevent coastal erosion and soil loss. Through this project, SK Innovation hopes to contribute meaningfully to climate resilience and biodiversity conservation.

“This is not just about corporate social responsibility — it is part of our long-term commitment to creating economic value while restoring ecosystems and supporting local communities,” said Kim Woo-kyung, Head of PR at SK Innovation. “We aim to contribute to global social value creation through the success of this initiative in Vietnam.”
