Holds bilateral talks with Canada, Brazil, Mexico, EU, and Germany during G7 meeting
Cho Hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Niagara, Canada, where the two discussed coordination on the pending Korea-U.S. Joint Fact Sheet.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Cho briefly spoke with Secretary Rubio on November 12 (local time) during the G7 extended session on maritime and energy security. A senior official stated that “Minister Cho emphasized the need for an early release of the joint explanatory document so that the agreements reached during the two recent summits between the leaders of Korea and the United States can be implemented without delay.” In response, Secretary Rubio reportedly expressed his commitment to work closely with relevant U.S. departments to ensure a prompt announcement.
The two allies were originally expected to release the Joint Fact Sheet summarizing the outcomes of their bilateral summit held on October 29 in Gyeongju on the sidelines of the APEC Summit. However, the release has been delayed for over two weeks due to differences among U.S. government agencies.
While Minister Cho did not hold a separate bilateral meeting with Secretary Rubio, he conducted a series of talks with other key counterparts, including those from Canada, Brazil, Mexico, the European Union (EU), and Germany.
In his meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Cho expressed Korea’s willingness to contribute to Canada’s next-generation submarine project and broader efforts to strengthen defense and security cooperation.
During talks with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, the two discussed upgrading their bilateral ties beyond the current “Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership” and agreed to accelerate negotiations on the Korea–Mercosur trade agreement.
In a meeting with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Cho asked that Mexico exclude Korea from any future tariff increases under consideration.
Minister Cho also met with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to exchange views on global issues and ways to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
