Threads records over 115 million daily active users globally in June, nearly catching up with X
Threads, the social media platform launched by Mark Zuckerberg to rival Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), has come close to matching X’s mobile user base just two years after its release.
According to data released on June 7 by analytics firm Similarweb, Threads averaged 115.1 million daily active users (DAU) globally across iOS and Android apps in June. This figure is approaching the 132 million DAU recorded by X during the same period.
Compared to the previous year, Threads saw a 127.8% surge in daily users, while X experienced a 15.2% drop, significantly narrowing the user gap between the two platforms.
In the U.S. alone, Threads reached 15.3 million daily mobile users, trailing behind X’s 22.9 million.
Analysts attribute this trend to backlash after Elon Musk strengthened ties with former President Donald Trump following the U.S. presidential election in November, prompting many users to leave X.
Meta Platforms launched Threads in July 2023 as a text-based alternative to X, aiming to attract users dissatisfied with Musk’s policies after acquiring Twitter.
However, X still dominates in terms of web traffic. As of June, X had an average of 145.8 million global daily web visitors—more than 20 times Threads’ 6.9 million. In the U.S., the gap is even wider, with X drawing 33.1 million web visitors compared to Threads’ 985,000.
Globally, Threads is estimated to have around 350 million monthly active users (MAU), while Musk previously claimed that X has 600 million MAU.
Meanwhile, Bluesky—a decentralized alternative to X—has also gained traction. Its global mobile app usage increased by 372.5% year-on-year, reaching 4.1 million users. In the U.S., the app has 2.4 million users, surpassing Threads’ web traffic in the region.
