S.Korean leader emphasizes duty to protect nationals abroad and expresses solidarity with Portugal
President Lee Jae-myung voiced profound grief on September 5 after a tragic tram derailment in Lisbon, Portugal, claimed the lives of two South Koreans.
Posting on his official Facebook page, Lee wrote, “I cannot hide my sorrow at the heartbreaking news from such a distant land. I extend my deepest condolences.” He expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and the Portuguese people while also wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
Lee underscored the government’s role, saying, “Wherever our citizens may be, it is the state’s responsibility to ensure their safety and comfort their pain. We will fulfill every duty and take all necessary measures to put the safety of our people first.”
The president also explained that the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Portugal had formed an emergency task force immediately after the accident, with the ambassador personally inspecting the site. He added that Seoul would convey condolences to the Prime Minister of Portugal and request special attention and support for the South Korean victims.
Concluding his statement, Lee extended solidarity to the Portuguese people: “I hope we can overcome this hardship together.”
